The key is to divide each day by geographical area. This way you will cut down on travel time and make the most of the time available. In this proposal we will start in the south and Teide National Park, then discover Tenerife's two main cities, travel through some of the most charming towns in the north and finish by exploring the spectacular west of the island.

To follow this 4-day Tenerife route, we recommend renting a car from the very start. Not only will it be more convenient, but you will also be able to stop at viewpoints, beaches or small villages that are not always part of the usual tours.

Day 1 · Volcanoes and the south coast

The first day is dedicated to discovering two of Tenerife's great icons: the breathtaking volcanic landscape of Teide National Park and the south coast, home to some of the island's most popular beaches.

Teide National Park

Start the day by driving up to Teide National Park. Along the way you will find several panoramic viewpoints and some of the most spectacular volcanic landscapes in Europe.

Take your time to explore the Roques de García and try one of the short signposted trails to enjoy the surroundings.

Vilaflor

Before heading down to the coast, it is worth stopping in Vilaflor, the highest municipality in the Canary Islands.

Take a leisurely walk through its historic centre, a World Heritage Site, visiting the Cathedral, Plaza del Adelantado, the Church of La Concepción and the main shopping streets in the centre.

Its large car park and direct access to the sand make it a very convenient stop.

Anaga Rural Park

End the day driving along the TF-12 road and stopping at some of its most famous viewpoints, such as Cruz del Carmen or Pico del Inglés.

The road has plenty of bends, but the views more than make up for the drive.

Day 3 · Between historic gardens and towns with true Canarian flavour

After discovering Teide, the metropolitan area and the Anaga massif, we will devote the third day to visiting some of the most historic towns in Tenerife. This route runs along the north of the island following the TF-5 road and combines heritage, gardens, traditional architecture and volcanic landscapes beside the ocean.

It is a very easy route, as the distances between towns are short and it allows you to enjoy each stop without long journeys.

Puerto de la Cruz, the tourist gateway to the north

We will begin the day in Puerto de la Cruz, a town that was one of the first tourist destinations in the Canary Islands and still preserves much of its seafaring character.

Our recommendation is to stroll calmly through the old town, where you will find squares full of terraces, pedestrian streets and traditional buildings. From there you can head to Paseo de San Telmo to admire the ocean and carry on to the area around Lago Martiánez, one of the city's most recognisable sights.

Barely ten minutes separate Puerto de la Cruz from La Orotava, a town that stands out for the elegance of its historic buildings and the excellent state of preservation of its town centre.

Here we recommend forgetting about the car for a while and walking through its streets. You will discover wooden balconies, inner courtyards, monumental churches and gardens that reflect the town's stately past.

The next stop is Icod de los Vinos, a town known internationally for being home to the Drago Milenario, one of the most important natural symbols of Tenerife.

It is a perfect stop to take a break before continuing towards the north-west coast.

Day 4 · Cliffs, ravines and the wildest corner of Tenerife

The fourth day will let you discover an area completely different from the rest of the trip. Western Tenerife stands out for its enormous cliffs, scenic roads and small villages surrounded by mountains that keep a much quieter atmosphere than other parts of the island.

Although the route covers fewer kilometres than other days, it is best to drive calmly, as many roads cross mountainous areas with plenty of bends.

Los Gigantes

The first stop is the impressive Los Gigantes Cliffs, walls of volcanic rock rising several hundred metres above the ocean.

You can admire them from the marina or head to the Mirador de Archipenque, located right by the road. There are parking areas nearby and it offers one of the best views along the entire west coast.

Mirador de Cherfe

Continuing along the TF-436 road you will reach the Mirador de Cherfe.

It is a short stop, but highly recommended, as from here you will get a magnificent panoramic view of the ravines and mountains surrounding Masca.

There is a small area set aside for parking, although it tends to fill up in high season, so it is best to visit early.

Masca

Few places capture Tenerife's mountain landscape better than the hamlet of Masca.

Its traditional houses, built on the slope of the ravine, create one of the island's most iconic images.

You don't need to do the well-known hiking trail to enjoy the setting. A walk through the village streets and a few minutes taking in the scenery are enough to understand why this corner has become a must-see.

Punta de Teno

The route continues on to Punta de Teno, one of the most spectacular places to admire the ocean and the Los Gigantes Cliffs from a distance.

A car is still the best option

Although Tenerife has a good public transport network, this itinerary includes places such as Masca, Punta de Teno, Teide National Park and several viewpoints where getting there by car is far more convenient.
