At Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts we are fully aware of our ecosystem and the need to protect it. That’s why we are conscious of moving forward with sustainable landscape management at our properties in the Caribbean. Turquoise seas, clean beaches and coral reefs. These landscapes are a source of pride for those who live there and a wonder for visitors.
One of our commitments is to integrate local ecosystems into their usage environment. For this reason, at our properties we nurture native flora as a way of attracting biodiversity, therefore improving the conditions of the ecosystems present there. The company continues to promote a sustainable business model that contributes to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals set in the Agenda 2030.
We are committed to boosting the comprehensive management of aspects that form part of the landscape under our Comprehensive Coastal Management Plan and via the “Landscapes” programme.
Actions taken include the creation of native plant nurseries in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Jamaica. In Playa La Romana, the company collaborates with the National Botanical Garden of the Dominican Republic in developing a nursery of over 3,000m2 with more than 15,000 specimens produced. In Mexico, the Environmental Management Unit (UMA in Spanish) has been producing up to five species protected by Mexican laws for some years (parlour, Sargent’s cherry, Florida thatch and ponytail palms, and the black trumpet tree).
Actions driving sustainable management
The company has planted over 2,000 protected species trees at its properties in the region since 2019. Grupo Piñero has, therefore, offset its carbon footprint by more than 300 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Throughout 2022, the company will continue with sustainable landscape management boosting actions as part of its “Landscape” Programme. These actions include extending its native plant nursery in Bávaro and improving the nursery in Mexico, as well as creating several composting areas to incorporate organic waste into operating processes at hotels, residential developments and golf courses.
Moreover, with the We Are Ecocentric movement, it will continue to encourage society as a whole to bring out their “ecocentric” side by taking actions that contribute to preserving the environment. With this movement, the company not only brings visibility to its sustainability strategy, it also calls for everyone to join together to care for the planet.
We have the responsibility to protect these ecosystems of great biological productivity, and which are the habitat of a huge variety of land and sea animals.
