This post is also available in: Español (Spanish)
If you’re considering a trip to Mexico in the near future, make a note of this date: 16 September. Here is everything you can experience on the biggest day in Mexico at Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort
Mexican Independence
These festivities have been celebrated all over the country since 1825. Throughout
this month, tributes are paid in Mexico to the memory of all those who fought for their nation and an enormous festival is held to demonstrate how proud the people are to be Mexican. The Cry of Independence is one of the most important events in the history of Mexico. These festivities are so famous that people come from all over the world to join the street parties that take place for the National Holiday.
You can see many Mexicans wearing the typical costumes of the country to celebrate this day with friends and family. You will also see the Mexican flag flying everywhere. Some buildings are even lit up with the Mexican colours or hang a giant flag from their balconies. The festival ends with fireworks and music.
Celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day
A fascinating destination where you can explore the traces of one of the world’s most ancient cultures. Walk around Chichén Itzá, Coba, Tulum… Or relax in Playa Akumal, Xpu-há, Cozumel… Mexico will surprise you with the simplicity and nature to be found absolutely everywhere.
Tradition, history, food and a festive atmosphere. That is how Mexico’s Independence Day is celebrated at Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort. If you intend to visit any of the Bahia Principe hotels on this day, the first thing you need to know is that the Mexican flag and colours will be present throughout the hotel, while music, Mariachi bands and a festive atmosphere will be everywhere. It is a very important day for the people of Mexico, so the first thing you need to learn to say is: ¡Viva México! (Long live Mexico!) This event brings out the very best from our Mexican employees.

Gabriel García, Head of Entertainment at Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort, tells us it is a huge challenge to bring Mexican culture to every guest at the hotel. However, they work hard to represent Mexican culture and traditions for everyone who visits a Bahia Principe hotel. Everyone will be invited to the big party to commemorate Mexico’s Independence Day with a Mariachi band (Jalisco) and a pre-Hispanic parade.
The day will begin with employees wearing the traditional Mexican costume to welcome guests and Mexican games will be played with the entertainment team. Live music (La marimba) will be followed by a pre-Hispanic show on the main stage, then Mexican folklore accompanied by more live music (Mariachi bands). The entertainment team tells us they also have a number of other surprises under their hats.
In terms of food and drink, Mexico is home to a wealth of gastronomic delights. On Mexico’s Independence Day, you should definitely try almost every dish and drink you can find in the buffet or themed restaurants. The bars will be offering special drinks and you should give tequila or beer a go to celebrate this day but, if you want to fit right in alongside the local people, have a Michelada cocktail. However, remember that it is a spicy drink.
A wide range of Mexican dishes and desserts will be available at the restaurants. Remember that this is a very special day for the Mexican people and you will find that the colours of the flag have been used for a number of dishes. That’s why you will find red, green and white totopos, sauces and tortillas in the buffet.

We also recommend you enjoy the ORIGEN show. This show is based on the country’s origins, which have given Mexican culture its identity, and is about the traditions passed down from generation to generation by the more than 60 indigenous peoples of this country.
